Support for the 2020-2021 fiscal year will include the following assurances:

• Follow-up support for administering Dyslexia screeners

• Possible strategies and accommodations for teachers

• Updates for District Dyslexia Coordinators and Administrators

• RTI

• Professional Development (through ESC works or at the request of individual districts) for teachers and administration regarding awareness, identification, developing plans and procedures.

 Dyslexia is defined as a learning disability that is neurological in origin, characterized by difficulties with accurate and fluent word recognition, poor spelling and decoding abilities that typically result from the phonological component of language.  These characteristics are often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities.  The statement that dyslexia is neurological in origin implies that the problem is not simply one of poor instruction or effort on the part of the student. Students with dyslexia are likely to perform poorly on measures of phonological processing, decoding non-words, and developing an adequate pool of sight words.
